Ride on mowers roared around the track

THE buzzing of engines could be heard from Odonnell Avenue as members of Myrtleford's Speedway Club and guests from interstate took to the racetrack for a fun day of ride-on mower racing on Saturday, September 14.

This was the speedway's first event in three years, following recently completed upgrades to the venue.

Myrtleford Speedway life member, Dave Heather, said it was a great turn out on the day.

"That's fantastic," he said, as he looked into the spectator area.

"We've had a good turn out, despite the rain."

Alpine Shire Mayor John Forsyth dropped by to enjoy the local event.

"Congratulations to all the members of the Myrtleford Speedway Club and the speedway committee as well as McPherson's for having the venue ready and open again for people to visit and have a great day out," he said.

"I know they've put in a lot of hard work to get to this point."

Visiting competitors Gayle and Craig James from Colac said they were looking forward to competing in their first event in Myrtleford.

"We've spent six years riding mowers," Gayle said.

"We saw the mower category at an event in Colac and we looked into it from there.

"It's a cheaper sport to get into and it looked like a lot of fun.

"I'm looking forward to having some fun and for everyone to stay safe."

One rider nearly flipped, but was later heard to say he just wanted for the crowd and the other competitors to know that the undercarriage of his mower was all in order.

The Ride On Mower Race Day was advertised as a fun, family day out and the Horsfall family from Benalla arrived to do just that.

"I've been to a few race events here in Myrtleford," David Horsfall said.

"We know Scotty Witherow, one of the club's members."

"Scotty tipped us off to the mower racing events in Mudgegonga years ago," Hayley Horsfall said.

"It should be a great event," David said.

"We'll have fun checking out what all the racers can do."

The McWhinney family from Cobram attended this year's race to participate in their second event in Myrtleford.

"Mower racing is a fabulous family outing," Matthew McWhinney said.

"It's good because kids and adults can get involved with it.

"The races bring out a bit of healthy family rivalry.

"Our friend convinced us last year to get a couple of mowers and get involved."

"We've been watching mower racing for a few years and started participating in races in Cobram," Tara McWhinney said.

"This is our son Xavier's first racing day on any vehicle, so we're hoping to have lots of fun."
